I believe the problems involved are well beyond us at the moment - not so much the problem of conceptualising an elevator in its completed, static state - but the problems associated with getting a cable, probably about 30,000 miles long, into place (it would have to go to a static object - satellite, captured asteroid, etc), that would need to be beyond the geostationary orbit, which is 22,000 miles up. During the phase of putting the cable into place, before it is attached to its space anchor, each section of that cable would be trying to orbit at a rate according to its distance from the earth, so it would be very hard to manage.Villa Elevators
It would be a wonderful project, but while I would love to be proved wrong, quite honestly, I don’t think it will be done during the lifetime of my grandchildren. It is possible that it will never be financially viable.
