Are elevators and escalators in the US safe?
One would like to think so. As a firefighter/paramedic I have worked many stuck in an elevator calls. Elevators have safety mechanisms that prevent them from going either up or down at excessive speeds. I have been stuck in an elevator once for thirty minutes at my side job as a paramedic in a trauma center at a large hospital. Overall I agree elevator & escalator safety is pretty good. Unfortunately like everything else in America, safety can take a back seat to corporate greed.China Safe elevator Manufacturers
Case in point would be a Dillard's store in St. Petersburg Florida. They settled a lawsuit in 2005 by paying $15 million to the family of a five year old girl. The gist of the lawsuit was that Dillard's had a faulty escalator. They knew the escalator was faulty but neglected to repair it. The escalator had caught/destroyed shoes or clothing of over 80 customers over several years. Allegedly Dillard’s went so far as to replace the shoes of those customers. Dillard's corporation had also set up a shell “elevator & escalator inspection” company. They used this company to rubber stamp state inspection and maintenance requirements, which allegedly were not properly or not at all conducted. This saved the corporation money for inspections, maintenance and repairs. A five year old girl was riding the escalator when her shoe became stuck, as she attempted to free her shoe she lost three fingers. Dillard’s circled the wagons with lawyers and blamed the girl and her family. The initial judgement was over $30 million, the family settled for $15 million to avoid it getting dragged out in appeals court for years.
